What women need to live with drug addiction – Social work support of opioid-dependent women in the low-threshold field taking into account a women-specific approach
Women-specific social work in the low-threshold area of drug support services still has scarcity value. This paper attempts to describe the special characteristics of this specific approach in social work. To be able to actually meet the needs of the women concerned a thorough examination of their environment has to take place.
Possible causes of addiction have to be considered, for instance resources in social and material matters as well as the physical and mental condition.
Based on a survey of Viennese drug abuse centers an overview is presented of the current low threshold offers of support and interventions in terms of social work, which are applied in order to improve the living conditions of the women concerned.
Additionally this paper establishes in which specific problem areas further offers of support are still required.
