Female homelessness is an existing, but only since the 1990s, acclaimed phenomenon. Having no home means social isolation, because the usability of adequate living space represents a basic requirement for participation in social life. Especially for women, the situation of homelessness is associated with shame and guilt, and leads to a reduction or loss of self esteem. The present work deals at first with the basic need of housing, subsequently especially with the female homelessness and the specific needs of homeless women. The aim of this paper is to find out in what way female-specific facilities are necessary in the Viennese homeless assistance.
