This research paper exposes the current situation of community work in the municipal residential buildings at Margaretengürtel in the fifth district of Vienna. The first part, based on theoretical texts, is an analysis of the professional standards of community work. Further, the current debate of community work in times of neoliberalism is discussed. In the empirical part of the paper the results of qualitative interviews with staff of the Jugend- und Stadtteilzentrum 5erHaus and Wohnpartner will be presented, discussed and compared. Particular emphasis is placed on the understanding and the problems of the implementation of community work, as well as on the analysis of the phenomena that makes community work necessary. Contradictions and similarities, as well as aspects of partisanship and processes of participation are explored and compared.
