In Ecuador, a little Country in the northwest of Southamerica, traditional birth attendants were recognised as an important human resource in fighting high maternal mortalityrates in the late 70s. The aim of this paper, ist to find out trough research, what kind of impact the work of traditional midwifes has on maternal mortalityrates. Research was made in Austria and Ecuador in Librarys, Internet and inquiering experts. Undoubtlesly the work of traditional birth attendants enjoys a lot of aknowledgment from community members. Also the public health system mentions them, when writing rules of action for the reduction of maternal Mortalityrates. Because of insufficient Data and scientific surveys, no answer can be given to the question on which impact traditional birth attendants have on maternal Mortalityrates.
