This thesis deals with the relevance of interdisciplinary management of dysphagia patients and describes the current situation of cooperation between speech and language therapists and dieticians. An interdisciplinary teamwork makes a contribution to a positive therapy effect, that leads to a higher quality of the patient’s life and the satisfaction of the mentoring persons improves.
In the remit of speech and language therapists and dieticians there are some spheres that coincide. This leads to the following question: “In what way does an interdisciplinary teamwork between dieticians and speech and language therapists in context of the therapy of patients with dysphagia at care homes in Vienna happen?” The prevalence of gaining dysphagia rises at increasing age. Especially at care homes the number of patients with dysphagia is very high. The care of these patients requires a lot of patience and endurance. Due to a good cooperation of a team therapy success can be significantly improved. For that success a respectful converse, a coordinated procedure and the pursuit of a common target is decisive. Thanks to interdisciplinary cooperation between dieticians and speech and language therapists the remits of the professional groups endorse, which can lead to better achievements. For an interdisciplinary management of patients with dysphagia also different professional groups are necessary. To get an overview of the current situation of the teamwork between speech and language therapists and dieticians at care homes in Vienna, three dieticians and two speech and language therapists were consulted by using half-standardized expert interviews. In practice, interdisciplinary cooperation between speech and language therapists and dieticians is usually not possible, due to little or no representation of professional groups. At the moment the focus is on extending the knowledge of dysphagia in all professional groups and to make the relevance of interdisciplinary management of patients with dysphagia obvious.
