Nowadays, depressive disorders have become a widespread disease. They are often based on pre-existing somatic conditions, which lead to the onset of depressions. The present work gives an overview of characteristics, manifestations, causes and potential forms of treatment. In this context, it defines the term comorbidity and its association with depressions that is further elucidated as a reaction to somatic diseases. Furthermore, examples of chronic pain, oncologic diseases, neurologic diseases, cardiovascular diseases and endocrine diseases are provided.
In a final step, the paper outlines the nursing staff‘s optimal care for depressive patients and bears relevance to today‘s nursing procedures.
