The aim of this thesis is to shed light on a possible connection between Social Work and the field of Music and Music Therapy. The special focus of this work lies on Social Work with elderly people and in what way music and Music Therapy can influence, respectively be of benefit to them.
The paper is going to introduce different approaches, methods and forms of participation involving Music, based on a body of literature comprised of english and german references.
In order to give a basic understanding of the meaning Music has for human beings, the first chapter of this thesis is going to deal with the understanding of Music and musicality, basic cornerstones of music psychology and the effect Music can have on people´s physical and psychic well-being, followed by an introduction into the field of Music Therapy.
The second chapter will be dealing with Social Work with the Elderly, giving an overview of techniques, approaches and care facilities concerning this field of Social Work.
Organizational structures of Aged-Care facilities, Day Care Centres and facilities which focus on Dementia and Terminal Care, will be introduced and discussed.
In the latter sections, the impact of Music in these respective fields will be presented, covering concrete examples and projects which use music in order to heal and/or improve the lives of the elderly
