This thesis deals with the question, which position social work in fact has, when urban districts are established in the context of urban development and management. As a representative we take a closer look at the “Seestadt Aspern”, which is currently developed on an abandoned airfield in the 22. district of Vienna. Theoretical considerations are made dealing with town planning generally and urban major projects in particular. The thesis tries to show the current situation in Aspern to see, if social work participates in this urban developing process and if yes, in which form it does. Finally, there is the attempt to show which role social work could play in urban development like we can see it at present in Aspern.
