The general image of Hip Hop is shaped by Gangster Rappers, sexism and glorification of violence, which may affect adolescents negatively according to certain media reports. The real and original ideals of Hip Hop stand in great contrast to its common perception. Furthermore Hip Hop includes several different and creative forms of expression, self- fulfilment and other positive aspects for adolescents. Consequently, this paper examines Hip Hop as a culture as well as its potentials and possibilities to support teenagers and young adults in their development phase. Thus, adolescents are described in greater detail to further understand their physical as well as psychological growth and needs. Additionally, the paper illustrates Hip Hop culture with the significance and importance of dance as one of its forms of expression. Furthermore, possible negative influences of certain Hip Hop genres are discussed to highlight potential risks for adolescents. Finally, this paper concludes by summarising the possibilities of integrating the potentials of Hip Hop into youth work in order to support adolescents´ need satisfaction, personal development and self-fulfilment.
