Your child has cancer! These diagnose means a very dramatic experience for the families it concerned. The result of something like this is that within the family many changes happen. Suddenly they have to deal with alterations in the family structure, the dynamics and shifts in the prospects for the future. Professional nursing can support and promote these families during this period. They try to verbalize feelings of fear, helplessness, lacks of understanding, vulnerability and gaps in knowledge and try to reduce these objects, the families have to struggle with, with appropriate actions. The wish to take care about your own child at home is in the centre of this situation and it should be possible for the parents to take their child with them. Family health nurses can support these families through this time. The goal of this procedure is to see the whole family as a patient and take care of all of them. The preparatory work from the World Health Organization on this issue provided a concept for the implementation of family nursing. In some countries it is already established. In Austria, however, this concept is still in its initial phase. The aim of the implementation of family health care is a forward-looking supply model to cope with the consistent changes in our society.
