This paper deals with the question which role social work had in the formation of the Rosa Lila Villa within the gay and lesbian movement in Vienna from 1980 to 1992. First, the beginnings of the international lesbian and gay movement in America are illustrated. Following this, the focus is set on which legal framework and political influences for lesbian and gay people in Austria existed at this time and how they co-influenced the formation of the Rosa Lila Villa. We will take a closer look at homosexual groups and projects of the gay movement, the womens’ and lesbian movement and the lesbian and gay movement and in particulary at the Rosa Lila Villa. These issues will be dealt with on the basis of current literature as well as narrative and episodic interviews. The document analysis represents a complementary source of information.
