The application of the term "Participation" has experienced an increase over the last few years and appears to have very positive connotations in the literature. This trend is also present in social work and, to a particular degree, in the field of professional youth work, where this term has, in many respects, already made a breakthrough in guiding action based principles. The question that arises is, however: What do the practitioners actually mean, when they speak of participation or use it when working with young people. This research paper aims to obtain an understanding of the term "participation" with regard to the staff working in the field of professional youth work in Vienna. The focus will also be guided towards the different understandings and how they are congruent to each other, where they are based and their connection to existing theoretical concepts and approaches. To cope with this requirement, will initially involve dealing with the thematic concepts and relevant theories from the field itself, and with the inclusion of interdisciplinary approaches with theoretical foundations. The study, based on qualitative interviews with experts, thereafter deals with the questions surrounding this research and looks for links to theoretical foundations.
