The aim of this paper is to give an insight into the topic „Nutrition during labour“. It includes the history, the reasons and the impacts of the practice of restricting oral intake perinatal. To the history belongs the „Mendelson-syndrom“, as well as the aspiration. To the reasons count the delayed gastric emptying, the gastric acidity and the gastric acid pH. Because an abstinence from food can cause bad outcomes for the mother, in addition will be discussed the effects of the restriction and oral liquid diet during labour.
Routine use of intravenous hydration became a common intervention due to the restriction of oral intake during labour. Therefore in the next chapter the meaningfulness of standard infusions without any medical supplement is broached,
at which their benefits and disadvantages are shown. The results are presented and discussed in the last chapter of this paper.
