This paper is based on a theoretical preparation of literature and studies and discusses the status of communication between radiotherapy patients and radiation therapists. Both, patients and radiation therapists value the significance of communication in the care of radiotherapy patients equally high. In addition to technical expertise, security, individual mentoring, encouragement and trust are key requirements that patients impose towards radiation therapists. Moreover, this is reflected in their professional self-understanding. As radiation therapists are direct reference contacts to radiotherapy patients, they are faced with questions about treatment, needs as well as fears and concerns. Therefore, besides irradiation, radiation therapists have an important role to play in patient care. In that case the relationship between patients and radiation therapists is the most important parameter in patient satisfaction - including communication as a decisive factor.
