The title of the following thesis is “Principles and Perspectives: Cooperatives and community work as instruments of democracy development to more solidarity in society”. This literature work should get to the bottom of a future project of human living together. Social work has the critical debate of causes for problems of society, such as unemployment, homelessness, poverty and social exclusion, based on the human rights, and the reflected development of practical solutions, as its goals. The right of appropriate and low priced living space is not, or not easily, available to all parts of society. In this context, considering economic and social political processes, the actuality of the cooperatives-movement and housing cooperatives and their principles of democracy, participation, solidarity and community, shall be discussed. This alternative form of economy hides not fully enough considered potentials for community work that shall be analysed on the basis of the actual housing market and district development. Considering cooperative principles and the general orientation of community work, the question of a possible implementation of a resident-centred city organisation through development of democracy to more participation and solidarity in society, shall be discussed and perspectives for future development shall be illustrated.
