This work deals with poverty in families with underage children. The first part clarifies technical terms and exemplifies the social cause and origin of poverty. The focus is on the impact poverty has on children and adolescents, on the whole family system and possible long term effects on those affected. In this context the effects on different aspects of life, like health, housing and clothing, education and social participation will be lightened. In addition, the focus is on coping strategies, on the one hand presenting different, individual ways of coping, on the other hand possible political strategies and measures targeting containment of and countering poverty. Finally the relationship between social work and poverty is emphasized. The development and history of Social Work is outlined and the contemporary situation of poverty is put into a contextual relationship with the “Tripelmandat” (Tripple Mandate) of Social Work by Silvia Staub-Bernasconi.
