The paper „Voluntary Work and Social Work. A Predatory Competition?“deals with the close relation between volunteering and professional social work in Austria. Many social organizations were founded by volunteers and have become more and more professional. As a result the traditional voluntary work in Austria (the so called “Ehrenamt”) stagnates. Nowadays there is a new form of volunteering, the so called civic engagement. Forcing civic engagement is a policy all over Europe and should help the welfare state in financial complicated times. The citizens should participate more in the social system and should take responsibility for each other.
Because of this policy professional social workers could be scared of rationalization. This paper tries to find an answer, if the competition in Austria is predatory or subsidiary.
