Over the last century our population is growing older. The increase in the group of eldery people is a challenge for many different professions, just as it is for social work. As people live longer maintenance of health and vigour is of crucial importance. The aim of this thesis is to discuss the possibilities and benefits of using sports and physical activities to empower elderly people, especially elderly men, to maintain self-efficacy, stay self-confident and have an independent life as long as possible. Empowering is a process which intends to guide and support the individual to take action. One way to keep people independent is to strengthen their physical and mental health. It was repeatedly affirmed that sport, if it is done correctly, can provide both. So far social work has rarely worked with sports programs to empower the elderly to live a richer and more autonomous life. Thus, it is essential that in the near future such interdisciplinary projects are promoted.
