This paper deals with the importance of the attachment theory to social work in the preventive detention. The forensic-psychiatric area is not yet an own special field of the social work, but there exist some approaches and behaviors which influences the art of working in this field. Goal of this paper is to work out, which importance the attachment theory in the preventive detention has or could have. At the beginning, the system of the preventive detention (in Austria) will be described. The second Chapter deals with a) the basics of the attachment theory, and b) the relations between attachment and delinquency, also the attachment and psychopathology, in which, as an example, the relations between attachment and personality disorders will be discussed more detailed. The last part of this paper first deals with the profile of social work in the forensic-psychiatric action area and then comes closer to an attachment-oriented social work.
