This bachelor thesis deals with the question, which role Motivational Interviewing has or can have as a method of counseling at working with bipolar clients. In order to answer this question bipolar disorder and the bedside manner of depressive and manic clients, which is recommended in literature, are described. Afterwards Motivational Interviewing and its application in a psychiatric context is depicted. Subsequently the social work duties in a clinic context are closer described, before a critical view on methodical action and counseling is given. Finally the different topics are connected and analyzed for similarities and differences. As a conclusion it is stated that Motivational Interviewing can play a major, positive role in a counseling setting with bipolar clients.
