This bachelor thesis discusses the topic of toxoplasmosis in pregnancy. To ensure professional advice and guidance by the midwife, symptoms, treatment and outcome of an infection with toxoplasma gondii are mentioned.
Screenings and diagnostic options are considered too. In addition, recommendations for prevention to avoid infection with Toxoplasma gondii are discussed. Throughout the literature review the prevailing questions are: “Does a mandatory screening of Toxoplasma gondii ensure a better natal outcome?” and “Which recommendations can be made by the midwife about prevention of toxoplasmosis infection?". To answer this questions scientific databases like Pubmed, Cochrane and CINAHL were used and showed that the first question cannot be answered completely. A screening can help to detect an infection and start an early treatment. But this can also done, if the well-being of the women and the foetus are monitored carefully. Guidelines do not recommend mandatory screenings of Toxoplasma gondii. The most important move to prevent an infection is hygienic and careful preparation of meat and vegetables as well as paying attention to a careful implementation of hand hygiene.
