Intimate partner violence is still a widespread problem in our society. Every fourth women has experienced domestic violence within a relationship. This research paper deals with images of femininity and their influence on domestic violence.
There are different forms and dynamics of violence. In the majority of cases, it is a combination of physical, psychological and sexual forms of violence with the aim to get power and control over the woman. The phenomenon of intimate partner violence has to be seen in the context of unequal gender relations. Furthermore, hegemonic images of femininity and masculinity are implicated in unequal gender relations as well. Based on hegemonic images of femininity some women develop specific self-images and concepts of life that have an adverse influence on their experience of domestic violence. Therefore, the consequence for social work in women`s shelters is the necessity to work on new self-images and coping strategies.
