On the one hand, this thesis discusses what makes people competent concerning personal and professional health-related actions. In terms of a holistic understanding, self-care is pointet out from multiple angles as a starting point for health literacy, health maintenance and the salutogenesis. On the other hand, the sickening mechanism of helping as a defense, known as the “helper syndrome”, is explained. Thus, self-care, especially in helping professions, is considered as very important. Finally options are given in order to prevent a helper syndrome.
