The aim of this thesis is to take up and fully explain the issue of malnutrition in relation to Alzheimer’s disease. In the process, various care measures to prevent malnutrition and strategies and resources to achieve nutritional balance are being illustrated, as well as the ethical aspects of tube feeding. Furthermore, this thesis gives a definition of the clinical pictures of Alzheimer’s dementia and of malnutrition and undernutrition. It also highlights the effective components of a healthy balanced diet and describes the terms “micronutrients and macronutrients”.
In the beginning, the thesis presents facts, figures and data on the actual number of people with Alzheimer’s disease in order to emphasize on the fact that malnutrition and undernutrition will become a serious problem in this field, which will remain an issue for us as nursing staff in the near future (vgl. Prince et al, 2014, S. 53 – 59).
