Within the framework of an individual case study the question examined is, how behavioural problems of toddlers in elementary educational institutes can be understood. Particularly educationists often are overtaxed or helpless how to interpret this behaviour and in the following how to cope with it in the pedagogical practice. Subject-specific literature helps to examine deviant behaviour differentiated, in order to provide a theoretical approach for understanding. The depiction of the material of the case study introduces into the topic of this thesis, in order to subsequently lead to the current research gap and the research question. An insight into the psychological development issues of toddlers is given and their relationship is investigated especially in regards to autonomy, language and emotion development. This also serves to understand and differentiate between short-term behavioural deficits and longer-term behavioural abnormities. Based on psychoanalytic theories, it is shown, how much a glance at the inner world of children is necessary, to be able to understand behavioural problems.
With the theory of “formation of psychological structures” and the case analysis, the research question will be answered. The final part of the thesis discusses the consequences for the pedagogical practice.
