This thesis deals with the automation of immunohematology. The immunohematological examinations, including the blood group determination, antibody screening and the antibody identification are described. For the determination plate-, tube-, column agglutination- and the solid phase methods are used. For automation, systems of various manufacturers are available. The state of automation in the General Hospital Vienna, the Austrian Red Cross and the blood banks and blood depots of the Vienna Hospital Association was surveyed by means of a questionnaire. In the last 20 years, most of the immunohematological examinations were automated in these institutes, but there are always some tests which are still done manually. For some of these tests, there is a possibility for automation exists. The automation in immunohematology has made great progress in recent years, but there is still enough potential for further developments.
