The following paper deals with nursing aspects of the wound management of burn wounds. Since this special type of wound management is very extensive, the focus of this paper is on local therapy and nursing aftercare to provide a better understanding of the care of burn victims on acute care units. This paper is based on an extensive literature research in various online databases and libraries. It turns out that a variety of topical therapeutics are available to provide burn wounds. Ointments are becoming more and more obsolete and are gradually being replaced by other wound dressings, as well as artificial or biological skin replacement products. Scar treatment also creates new treatment options thanks to new technolgies, such as lasers. Due to the complexity of the wound management of burn wounds, enormous knowledge is needed to adaquately care for affected persons. Therefore the burn wound management should not only be part of the general wound management, but its own discipline with appropriate education and training opportunities.
