This thesis is concerned with the evolution of nursing from altruistically motivated help to those around you towards a professional occupation. This work tries to answer questions concerning the path Austrian nursing took in professionalizing itself, and how this process differs from its British equivalent in the last 20 Years. Answering these, requires an overview of terms related to “Professionalism” in addition to a historical perspective on nursing in both Nations. Through covering these topics, the theme of a “core element” of nursing will emerge, which can provide a groundwork for future professionalization in Austria. The comparison of Britain and Austria will show a rather similar Progress throughout the course of the last 20 years, due to regulations spanning across Europe. The importance of a core element, and what effect an academically qualified occupational Group can have on its visibility and use will be shown in addition.
