This thesis deals with esthetic breast augmentation surgery from a nursing point of view. As necessary background information, the psychosocial factors of breast augmentation together with the motivations to undergo surgery for cultural beauty standards are discussed; the legal and ethical aspects of including legal cases concerning breast
augmentation are discussed; in this respect, psychological and psychiatric comorbidities in patients may play a role; furthermore, an overview of some of the studies on satisfaction of outcome are discussed. Finally, a detailed analysis of the role of nursing in breast augmentation procedures is given. As a conclusion, breast augmentation surgery is a frequent esthetic practice which usually does not have too many complications due to the fact that the surgery is not very damaging and the patients are typically healthy, but also requires the cooperation of the patients and a certain discipline after surgery to secure a satisfying result. Otherwise, complications and unfavorable developments may occur more frequently.
