About 20% of all women, who had a mastectomy, develop a upperlimb lymphedema after the surgery. At the first moment, 20% doesn’t seem much, but fort he affected people it means a loss of quality of life. Patient education by a nurse would increase the patients adherence significantly and the appearance of a lymphedema is less common. Early detection by the patients themselves decreases the appear of symptomsor lymphedema. The focus is on interdisciplinary work between nurses and all the other professional categories and to find solutions for an increase of adherence. Studies present that it is the most important thing to prevent a lymphedema or to diagnose it early enough. There is a correlation between a sucessful prophylaxis and different methods of education, as an example kinesiologic taping and Qigong. It is up to the nursing to find an appropriate moment for education, to establish a relationship between the professional categories and to improve the patients ́ adherence and to prevent a lymphedema.
