In this study different approaches to conflict management, which have proven themselves in social media, have been worked out and discussed regarding their feasibility in public management. Due to the rapid development of social media, new forms of communication and conflicts are emerging, generating new approaches to dealing with conflict situations. In an exploratory approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five experts in this area to gain an overview of existing strategies for successful conflict solution. From the gained insights, conclusions are drawn for public management: on the one hand for public officials as users of social media and on the other hand for the design of framework conditions. A competent dealing of public officials with social media is characterized by an open discussion of conflicts, critical public scrutiny and a quick reaction to events. Generating data on reported cases is important for the design of framework conditions. Likewise, an awareness of existing projects and initiatives should be created so they gain more visibility. At the structural level, it is recommended that existing initiatives should be promoted and expanded.
